A look at “Video-mediated farmer-to-farmer learning for sustainable agriculture - A scoping study for SDC, SAI Platform and GFRAS” produced by AGRO Insight, Ghent, Belgium, October 2011
Whilst this report isn't strictly part of CANEPAL's scope (it addresses sustainable agriculture, and in particular the use of farmer training videos in developing countries rather than focusing on sheep farming specifically) it puts forward some very interesting points. The report examines key models of farmer-to-farmer video production and dissemination, and discusses the implications for future capacity building and how each model could contribute content to a global web-based platform.
Several of the lessons emerging from this report could be considered for sheep farming, especially in rural areas. For example, building on the general consensus that farmers need good agricultural training videos, the report finds that 85% of respondents believe that videos must be available in local languages in order to be effective. Poor quality of the training videos is often considered a barrier; even if the video is produced in local languages the results are limited and often benefit the intermediaries, not the small-scale farmers.
